Magnolia 'Little Gem' (Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem') is a dwarf variety of the Southern magnolia tree, prized for its smaller stature and prolific flowering. It typically grows to a height of around 4.5 to 6 meters with a spread of 2.5 to 3.5 meters, making it suitable for smaller gardens or as a focal point in landscapes.

Features:

  • Compact evergreen shrub or small tree.
  • Glossy, dark green leaves with a leathery texture.
  • Fragrant, creamy-white flowers appear in spring and sporadically throughout the summer and fall.
  • Blooms are large and cup-shaped, measuring around 7.5 to 10 cm in diameter.
  • Tolerant of heat and humidity.

Instructions and Care:

Planting

  • Choose a location with well-drained soil and full to partial sunlight.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball.
  • Place the plant in the hole and backfill with soil, ensuring the crown of the plant is level with the soil surface.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.
Watering:
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first year after planting.
  • Once established, 'Little Gem' is somewhat drought tolerant but will benefit from regular watering during dry spells.
Pruning:
  • Prune as needed to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches.
  • Light pruning after the main spring bloom can encourage bushier growth and additional flower production.
Fertilizing:
  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth and flowering.
  • Avoid excessive fertilization, as it can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
Mulching:
  • Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
Protection from Frost:
  • In regions with occasional frost, protect young plants with frost cloth or bring containers indoors during cold snaps.
Pests and Diseases:
  • 'Little Gem' is relatively pest and disease resistant, but watch for issues such as scale insects or fungal diseases in humid conditions.
  • Treat any pest or disease problems promptly with appropriate insecticides or fungicides.
